Erik ten Hag says “normal” for Anthony Elanga to find less game time at Manchester United this season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has claimed that it is “normal” for Anthony Elanga to have found less game time this season. The Sweden international got regular minutes under Ralf Rangnick in the previous campaign.

The 20-year-old got a good run in the team under the interim boss. However, the Dutch manager has opted for other options in his starting lineup. In the Premier League, the winger got a rare start against West Ham United on Sunday (30 October).

Speaking to the Viaplay Sweden (h/t Manchester Evening News) after the 1-0 victory over the Hammers at Old Trafford, Ten Hag sees a big future ahead for Elanga in the game.

Erik ten Hag feels it is “normal” for Anthony Elnaga to get less game time at Manchester United this season than last.

“He’s doing well and he’s a young guy. Last year, he came in for a lot of games and this year, obviously, I would say it’s normal to drop down in minutes.

“I’m happy to work with him. He has big potential. I think he can have a really good position in world football.”

Man United signed Antony in the recent transfer window from Ajax. The 22-year-old has been the first choice under the Dutch manager. The Brazilian has had a fruitful start to his career in red after reuniting with his former Ajax head coach in Manchester.

Subsequently, the United academy graduate’s chances have diminished with the arrival of Antony. Elanga has found it difficult to get on the pitch for us.

Ten Hag has other players to choose from to play on the wings. Jadon Sancho is among the most talented players in the squad, although he has not been able to showcase his skills consistently with the Red Devils.

Marcus Rashford is another player capable of playing on the wing. Like the young Swede, the 25-year-old came up through the youth ranks at Man United and made a place for himself in the senior squad.

The England international has been deployed on the left wing as well as through the middle by the Dutch manager. And the forward has had a considerable impact in the team this season.

Elanga showed against West Ham that he deserves more opportunities in the starting XI. While the 20-year-old still needs to develop his game, the Swede’s energy on the pitch cannot be faulted.
