Erik ten Hag hints Cristiano Ronaldo punishment may not last longer than one game

Speaking in an interview as quoted by popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Erik ten Hag hints that axed Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo could see his punishment rescinded following the Chelsea clash.

The Dutch tactician chose to leave the 37-year-old superstar out of the squad for the game against Chelsea in the aftermath of Ronaldo refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham when called upon.

The Portuguese superstar was not pleased with being left on the bench against the Lilywhites and his actions eventually ended up costing him. He is now set to miss the clash against Chelsea today and this is a huge blow for the player.

Ronaldo has not been in the best of forms this season. He has struggled to get regular game time like he used to and even when Ten Hag has chosen to play him, he has looked far from the levels that we know he can produce.

Erik ten Hag has shown a reluctance to start Ronaldo for much of this campaign. He has preferred Anthony Martial when fit and even used Marcus Rashford as a striker in place of the former Real Madrid superstar.

Speaking about the punishment, Ten Hag confirmed that he will count on the 37-year-old and he expects him to be back very soon.

“Will it be longer? I don’t think so, no. I don’t want to miss him. I want him to be in the squad and be involved as he has an impact”

This quote from Erik ten Hag puts to bed all the rumours regarding the talented Portuguese striker’s future at the club. He is expected to be back on the pitch very soon and would have completed his punishment by missing the Chelsea game.

Although the situation is not ideal for Ronaldo, it shows the kind of authority that Ten Hag wants to command in the dressing room. He has made it very clear that certain violations will not be tolerated, whoever the player is.
