Jonathan Woodgate praises Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Casemiro for a dominant display against Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United moved closer to the top four with a splendid 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Signs of progress have been there for everyone for us but it was hands down the best performance under Erik Ten Hag.
Each player contributed to the best of their ability and United, bar the first ten minutes, dominated throughout the game had it not been for some superb saves from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, the scoreline could have been much more in favour of the hosts.
Former Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate (h/t BBC) has given his honest verdict on the performance of Spurs and believes United deserved the victory, particularly credited midfielders Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Casemiro for a dominant display.
“Very impressive from United. Man United really starting dominating with Fred, Casemiro and Fernandes in the centre of the pitch. They out fought the Tottenham midfield three.”
The midfield trio was particularly impressive in the win and kept the Spurs attack completely at bay, leading the press from the front and also being influential in both goals.
Fred had a rather average performance against Newcastle United on the weekend and many were surprised to see his inclusion in the starting eleven but he justified his selection with an impressive performance and capped it off with his first goal of the season.
Bruno Fernandes has taken the responsibility of leading the team with utmost grit and passion and is an integral part of the way we want to play. He capped his performance off with a beautiful curler which summed up his Man of the Match performance.
The Portuguese was electric from the beginning and with the double pivot of Fred and Casemiro behind him, he played with much more freedom and created numerous chances for his teammate.
Many questioned Ten Hag’s decision not to start Casemiro in the Manchester Derby and if the Brazilian’s last three performances are to be seen, it does come across as a fair question.
However, the former Real Madrid man has made big progress over the course and had a monstrous performance today and his addition to the team has given us defensive stability which was shaky in the past years.
