Barcelona continue monitoring Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot with defence ‘top priority’ for Xavi
Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot is still being monitored by Barcelona, with defence the top priority for the La Liga outfit’s manager Xavi, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Sun).
The 23-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season in 2023. However, the Red Devils do have the option to extend the Portugal international’s contract by an additional year.
Although, United could let Dalot go in the January transfer window instead of losing him on a free transfer next summer. The right-back is open to remaining in Manchester. However, the 22-year-old is also allured by the idea of moving to Catalonia.
Barcelona had already sent scouts to watch Dalot and held conversations with his agent with the winter window on the horizon.
Juventus and AS Roma also have an eye on the Portuguese. Joose Mourinho signed the right-back for the Red Devils in 2018 and is looking to reunite with him in Rome.
Dalot carved a place for himself in the team only in the middle of last season. The 23-year-old initially had a tough start to his career in Manchester and joined AC Milan on loan for the 2020/21 campaign.
Upon his return from a relatively fruitful spell in Italy, Dalot once again found himself on the bench under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the previous campaign. However, the arrival of Ralf Rangnick changed the Portuguese right-back’s fortunes.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka seems to have fallen further down the pecking order with the appointment of Erik ten Hag. The former Crystal Palace star has not featured a lot this season.
