Anthony Martial out with injury; Christian Eriksen in contention for Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is unavailable due to an injury against Tottenham Hotspur, while Christian Eriksen is in contention to feature against his former club. However, Erik ten Hag is still uncertain whether the Denmark international will take the pitch on 19 October.
The Red Devils face Spurs at Old Trafford in the Premier League. The Dutch manager will take on Antonio Conte’s team after a rather disappointing 0-0 draw against Newcastle United.
Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News ahead of the game against Tottenham, the gaffer revealed Eriksen could get back into the team. On the other hand, the former AS Monaco striker will be on the sidelines.
“Anthony Martial is not available. He’s back on the pitch but not in the team training. Christian Eriksen returned in the team training today and we have to see how that works out, how he will recover, if he has the energy tomorrow, so we have to wait for that.”
Both the French attacker and Danish midfielder have been important for United this season. The duo have had an impact whenever they have featured under the former Ajax head coach.
Martial has been somewhat of a revelation for fans this season. The 26-year-old could not get into the team in the previous campaign. And subsequently, the centre-forward moved to Sevilla on loan in January.
However, Ten Hag seems to have rejuvenated Martial. The French national has contributed a goal or assist in every game he has played. Unfortunately, fitness issues have hindered the striker’s availability.
Eriksen signed for United as a free agent in the recent transfer window. And the 30-year-old has surprised fans with his displays in a red shirt, starting a majority of the fixtures.
The Denmark international spent six-and-a-half seasons with Tottenham before leaving for Inter Milan. The midfielder has eventually landed in Manchester and embraced his place in the number eight position.
