Erik ten Hag rues Manchester United’s wastefulness against Omonia
Speaking to BT Sport after Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Omonia Nicosia as quoted by BBC, Man United boss Erik ten Hag was irked by how wasteful his side were in front of goal in the clash last night, with the Red Devils needing a late winner to see them through.
Man United took on Omonia for the second time in two weeks, with the Red Devils managing to get the better of the Cypriot club last time around as well. Last night’s performance wasn’t dismal by any stretch of the imagination, but they could not find the back of the net.
The man who stood between Man United and the goal last night was Omonia goalie Francis Uzoho, who had an absolutely sensational showing. The shot-stopper saved 12 of the 13 shots he faced, with the goal being the only one that he failed to stop.
Man United must have converted more of their chances though. They should have had a more clinical touch in front of goal and put away more of their chances and should have also been able to take more shots.
Regardless, what mattered eventually was the fact that the Reds ended up getting the three points. This puts them second in their group just behind Real Sociedad who have had a perfect record so far and they will be hoping to get out of this group as league leaders.
However, despite the result, Erik ten Hag was not very happy about what he was seeing from his team and rued the fact that his team could not be more clinical.
“No it’s not because football is about scoring goals. We created so many chances but we only hit the back of the net once. The team are patient, they kept creating and then they scored.”
The Red Devils have started playing much more liquid football in recent weeks. However, they need to start acting better in front of goal and put away the numerous chances that they create during a game. If not, it could come back to hurt them in big games.
One player who should be responsible for doing just this is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar is his side’s star man and as a striker, he should be efficient at putting away the chances. Throughout his career, Ronaldo has done just that but he needs to step up this season.
