Manchester United star Harry Maguire has the ‘full support’ of England manager Gareth Southgate for the World Cup squad
Harry Maguire is confident he will get into the England World Cup squad despite losing his place at Manchester United. The 29-year-old has the ‘full support’ of the Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate, according to the Mirror.
Maguire is confident about his place in the England setup. The centre-back knows he has the backing of Southgate. And his inclusion in the squad that will be flying to Qatar is not in doubt.
The England manager has been in constant contact with his key players. And the United captain is aware of Southgate’s trust in him. However, there is no guarantee of what might happen beyond the World Cup.
Maguire has had a tough time with the Red Devils. Since the Euro 2020 campaign, whether the English defender shined, he has been underwhelming for the Old Trafford side. The Three Lions made it to the final at Wembley Stadium but were beaten by Italy in the penalty shootout.
United were bad defensively last season. Maguire made some high-profile errors throughout the course of the campaign. And fans were asking for the 29-year-old to be dropped.
However, Maguire was still an important player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. But in the end, the Red Devils had a poor season, finishing sixth in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag has trusted Maguire with the captain’s armband. And the Dutch manager started the England international in the first two games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. But unfortunately, we lost both matches.
And since then, Maguire has not started for United in the Premier League. However, Southgate did put his faith in the 29-year-old and started him against Italy and Germany in the recent international break. But he picked up an injury on national duty.
