Manchester United ‘enquired’ about Olympique Lyon star Malo Gusto in the recent transfer window

Manchester United ‘enquired’ about signing Olympique Lyon right-back Malo Gusto in the summer of 2022, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News). The 19-year-old has been in fine form since breaking out last season.

Gusto has come up through the youth ranks at Les Gones and established himself in the first team in the 2021/22 campaign. The France U21 international has once again been a key member of the Ligue 1 outfit’s starting XI this season.

The 19-year-old will see his current contract with Lyon expire in 2024. And teams like Arsenal and Chelsa in the Premier League also have an eye on the defender.

United currently have two established eight-backs in the squad for Erik ten Hag to choose from. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has fallen down the pecking order in recent months.

The Former Crystal Palace star has lost his place in the team since the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 24-year-old has played just four minutes of competitive football in the current campaign.

Diogo Dalot was preferred in the right-back spot by Ralf Rangnick and the Portuguese has kept his place in the lineup with the arrival of the new gaffer. The 23-year-old has started every game for the Red Devils this season.

However, with no one in the squad pushing Dalot for a place in the side, fans are concerned. While the Portugal international has been in fine form under Ten Hag, we seemingly do not have a backup in the event the 23-year-old becomes unavailable.

Thus, it is evidently vital for United to go into the market and get someone capable of challenging Dalot.

Gusto is someone who has been performing well. However, is it too soon for the 19-year-old to step up to the English top flight? Only time will tell. First, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side convert their interest into something substantial.
