Erik ten Hag thanks Manchester City for giving Manchester United ‘a reality check’ at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has thanked Manchester City for giving the Red Devils “a reality check” at the Etihad stadium. The Old Trafford side were at the receiving end of a 6-3 drubbing at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s team.

United went into the game against City on a high. The Red Devils had gone on a four-game winning run in the Premier League before visiting the Etihad. However, the Dutch manager did not have an answer for the Sky Blues’ attack.

Speaking before the game against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag is grateful to Guardiola and City. The Dutch manager feels the Sky Blues gave the Red Devils a lesson on where they need to improve.

“We can get a lot of confidence from beating Arsenal and Liverpool, but now we get a reality check with Man City. So thank you for the lesson, Pep and City. We have to understand, we have to do things much better.”

United started with the same team that beat table-toppers Arsenal in the league. We beat the Gunner 3-1. with goals from Antony and Marcus Rashford.

However, City were better than us on the day. The Sky Blues went into the break four goals up. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden got a brace each before half-time.

While City outplayed United in the first half, the Red Devils did better in the second 45. However, it is to be noted that the Sky Blues made multiple changes.

The new attacking signing from Ajax gave United a bit of life with a long-range effort from almost 25 yards out, beating Ederson. However, City’s two goalscorers got their hat tricks in the 64th and 73rd minutes.

Anthony Martial came on for Rashford in the second half. And the French centre-forward made the scoreline a bit more respectable with two late goals against the Cityznes.
