Gareth Southgate confirms Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire picked up an injury in England vs Germany
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire picked up an injury as England played Germany at Wembley Stadium. The 29-year-old played 90 minutes for the Three Lions in the 3-3 draw.
Fans pointed fingers at Maguire for the first two goals Hansi Flick’s team scored. The Red Devil gave away a penalty after a foul on Jamal Musiala. Then, in the buildup to Germany’s second goal, the 29-year-old was the one who lost the ball.
After the game via Manchester Evening News, the England manager revealed Maguire was one of the players who suffered a knock. Manchester City centre-back John Stones also felt something in his hamstring.
“John is feeling something with his hamstring. Harry is feeling something a little bit as well.”
At United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have solidified their place in the starting lineup. Unfortunately, this has left the United captain on the bench in most games.
Maguire has not started a Premier League game for the Old Trafford side since the 4-0 drubbing United suffered at the hands of Brentford. The 29-year-old has only started a Europa League game since then.
Thus, England fans have questioned Maguire’s involvement in the recent UEFA Nations League fixtures. Apart from the game against Germany, the centre-back also played the entirety of the Italy fixture.
Maguire’s performance against Die Mannschaft has not helped his cause. The United defender was not at his best against Germany and has given fans a reason to doubt his selection.
Will Maguire start for the Three Lions at the Qatar World Cup? Only time will tell. However, at club level, getting regular minutes will evidently be a tough task. Now, with an apparent injury, it remains to be seen for how long the 29-year-old will be on the sidelines.
