Manchester United target Cody Gakpo set to sign new deal with PSV
According to Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagblad, Manchester United summer target Cody Gakpo is set to sign a new deal with PSV Eindhoven after failing to secure a move away during the transfer window that just concluded.
The Red Devils were not the only club interested in signing the talented winger, with other Premier League clubs also showing interest. Leeds United and Southampton have also shown interest in the Dutchman but a move never materialised.
Heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old winger, Gakpo was expected to be on his way to Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils eventually settled for Brazilian sensation Antony with the former Ajax man now a Man United player.
Gakpo is one of the most exciting prospects coming out of the Eredivisie in recent years. A product of the PSV youth academy, the 23-year-old is touted as the next big thing and it is only a matter of time before he secures his next big move.
Gakpo has had a sensational start to the season for PSV. He has played nine games for the Dutch giants across all competitions until now scoring seven goals and providing six assists. These numbers are truly ridiculous from the youngster.
These performances are especially special considering the fact that these are coming on the back of an exceptional season last time around. The Dutch starlet played 47 times for PSV last season scoring 21 goals and providing 15 assists.
Gakpo has a contract with PSV until 2026 (transfermarkt) and he is now set to be offered a new deal. Regardless, I don’t expect the Dutch starlet to stay for too long at the club though with top clubs likely to approach the player during the next window.
We don’t know if Manchester United still want to sign the talented winger, considering that they already have Antony. However, there are many other clubs who will be keen on signing the Dutchman even if the Red Devils don’t show interest.
