Manchester United made a late play for RCD Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas
Manchester United put in a late offer for RCD Espanyol centre-forward Raul de Tomas on transfer deadline day, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 27-year-old was keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer. The Red Devils held talks with the La Liga outfit for the Spain international. However, a deal failed to materialise.
De Tomas started his football career at the Real Madrid academy. Since then, the 27-year-old has mostly played in Spain. In the 2019/20 season, he moved to Espanyol.
For the Periquitos, De Tomas has proved to be a prolific goalscorer. In the previous campaign, the 27-year-old played in 34 La Liga games and scored 17 goals.
United evidently wanted to bolster their attacking options during the transfer window. Erik ten Hag’s side has only added Antony to the forward line. The Brazilian was signed from Ajax.
The other signings have been in the midfield and defence. The signings of Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez signify that United focused on these two areas of the pitch.
For most of the summer, Cristiano Ronaldo was seemingly angling for a move away from Manchester. The Portugal international has ended up staying. However, the 37-year-old has mainly been on the pitch up until now in the 2022/23 campaign.
Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have found their feet over the last few fixtures. Anthony Martial was in fine form during pre-season. However, the Frenchman’s start to the season has been marred by injuries. Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho are the backups in the squad.
