Lisandro Martinez has been awarded the August Player of the Month award for Manchester United
Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez has been awarded his August Player of the Month award after garnering 84 per cent of fans’ votes, via Manchester Evening News.
The Argentine was one of the three defenders, alongside Raphael Varane and Tyrell Malacia, nominated for the honour. In the end, it was the former Ajax star who won the accolade.
Martinez has started every game under the new gaffer up until now. Initially, the Argentine was partnered with captain Harry Maguire. However, the results did not go our way.
In Ten Hag’s first competitive game in the Old Trafford dugout, United lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls carved our defence open and both our centre-backs struggled.
The Manchester-based club then visited the Gtech Community Stadium. However, the game against Brentford quickly turned sour as the Red Devils conceded four goals in the opening 35 minutes.
Ten Hag made some big decisions as Liverpool visited Old Trafford. Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo were left on the bench from the start. Most people had counted United out even before a ball was kicked.
Martinez started with Varane this time out. And the duo were solid at the back. United have since started an unchanged XI. And the Argentine and France international stars have started together against Southampton and Leicester City as well.
The former Ajax star had many doubt his ability to thrive in the Premier League. Martinez’s apparent lack of physicality is seen by many as a weakness for Premier League football. However, the Argentina international has proven that he can go toe-to-toe with any opposition player. His aggression is key in that aspect.
