Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic earmarked as backup to David de Gea at Manchester United
Manchester United have earmarked Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to serve as backup to David de Gea, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t Manchester Evening News].
The Red Devils see the Bosnia and Herzegovina international as an ideal second-choice shot-stopper. The 35-year-old currently plays for Everton and has vast Premier League experience.
Begovic’s best period came when he played at Stoke City. The 35-year-old spent five-and-a-half seasons with the Potters. In the Bosnian’s time with the Staffordshire side, he featured in 210 games, keeping 50 clean sheets.
From Stoke, the 35-year-old got a move to big boys Chelsea. However, Begovic played a bit-part role for the Blues. The Bosnian joined AFC Bournemouth after his stint in London.
Begovic has also played for AC Milan before landing in Merseyside last year. The Bosnian hasn’t played much for the Toffees. He serves as a backup to England international Jordan Pickford.
It’s the 35-year-old’s know-how of English football’s first tier that entices United. However, while he doesn’t get regular game time anymore, Everton are still keen to keep hold of the player.
Dean Henderson left the Manchester-based club on loan for Nottingham Forest this summer. At United, Erik ten Hag can only call upon Tom Heaton in place of De Gea. But the Dutch manager sees the 36-year-old as the third-choice keeper.
Our Spanish number one has had a horrendous start to the new campaign. De Gea hasn’t looked comfortable playing out from the back. The 31-year-old’s distribution isn’t his best attribute.

While Begovic is an experienced player, United need someone with more quality on the bench to come on for De Gea at times. It remains to be seen whether the Spaniard will continue to struggle in the new system.
