Transfer News: Jorge Mendes optimistic about Cristiano Ronaldo to Atletico Madrid

According to a tweet posted by The United Stand [h/t Manchester Evening News], Jorge Mendes is optimistic about securing a move for Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future has been up for debate for quite some time now with the former Juventus man being linked with a move away from Old Trafford just one year after joining the Red Devils for the second time.

The fact that Man United failed to qualify for the Champions League could be playing on the mind of the Real Madrid superstar who has been popularly dubbed as ‘Mr Champions League ‘ and this could be the reason he wants to leave.

After all, Ronaldo is 37 and it is not clear how many years the player has left in the top flight. He will not want to waste one year of his career playing in the Europa League, especially at this stage of his career.

The former Real Madrid man’s return to Old Trafford has been mixed at best. Whilst his performances have been exceptional from a personal point of view, the team really had an abysmal season last time around.

Man United ended trophyless yet again last season. They struggled their way to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and got knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in the round of 16.

The domestic cups could have been an option for the Red Devils to get a trophy added to their cabinet but Man United failed to do that too. Hence, Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing hasn’t really helped Man United.

Atletico Madrid offers a very different option for Cristiano Ronaldo. He will get the Champions League football that he is craving and will get to play in La Liga yet again, a league that he has tasted success in before.

Man United will be hoping Ronaldo’s future is sorted out soon but given that he still has a year on his contract, they can hope to keep him until at least the summer of 2023. It is best that there is clarity as soon as possible so that the Red Devils can proceed accordingly.
