Arsenal submitted their second offer for Manchester United target Lisandro Martinez

According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf (h/t Metro), Arsenal have submitted an improved bid for Manchester United target Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United are the Gunners’ primary rival for Martinez. After failing to sign Jurrien Timber, the Red Devils turned their focus to the Argentine. Arsenal, however, is at the lead in the Martinez race.

For Martinez, the Gunners submitted a revised bid worth £34.4 million. Even though the Dutch goliaths are seeking a fee of around £43 million for the Argentine international, they are more interested in keeping the Argentinian.

Martinez was voted the Dutch team’s Player of the Year in the previous campaign, which speaks something about how effective he has been for them. It is the Argentine’s versatility which makes him a very useful player.

He can be played in defensive midfield as well- a position United must strengthen this summer. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are, after all, no longer at the club.

Martinez is an important member of Argentina’s national squad under Lionel Scaloni, although things are different with him. The 24-year-old is not yet a regular starter for Scaloni, who has so far remained with his tried-and-trusted centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi.

Martinez might be able to earn a starting berth for his country with a move to the Premier League, especially with the attention he would receive if he moved to Carrington. That is most definitely a possibility, but we must continue to be cautious around the North Londoners in this contest.

At Man Utd, he would get the chance to join one of the biggest sporting teams in the world- and play for a manager who knows all about him during their time together at Holland. That, in turn, can make it easy for him to settle in a new city.

United would be wise to work on a proposal for Martinez this summer, but it is unclear how this situation will play out given Ajax’s position, which may be rather troublesome even for us.
