Manchester United now ready to make €80million transfer bid for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong

According to The Times (Subscription Required), Manchester United are now willing to table an €80million transfer bid to facilitate a move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. There could be a conclusion to this long-standing saga shortly, with the English side growing closer to getting their hands on the midfielder.

Barca have slapped an asking price of €85million for de Jong’s services, but they could now be willing to accept the new bid that Man United are in line to make for the central midfielder. That is because the former are looking to sell him before Thursday when their books of accounts must be closed.

Erik ten Hag made it clear that the Dutch international is his priority, and the Red Devils have focused their efforts on de Jong for that reason. That being said, it is thought that achievable bonuses would also be included in the deal, which will be spread across several seasons to reduce the instant financial blow.

De Jong to join Man Utd before July?

If the Manchester board could finalise a move for de Jong before July, then they would have done a great job regardless of the frustrations the long-standing saga had created within the fanbase. After all, they would have succeeded in giving ten Hag his key piece of the project.

Following the departures of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba on free transfers, we have lost players who instil technical excellence and creative flair from deep. De Jong can bring just that, looking at how he played under ten Hag during their time together at Ajax.

Furthermore, de Jong’s adaptability to other roles would be an added incentive, as he has shown at Camp Nou over the past few campaigns. In fact, the 25-year-old managed to earn 40 key passes in his first two seasons with the Catalans, which is an output only matched by Xavi Hernandez since the 2014-15 season.

That being said, nothing is finalised just yet, so we have to wait and see how this situation will pan out in the next few days. The supporters would hope for a favourable outcome, but only time will tell whether that will be the case or not.

Another concerning factor for the fans would be how the signing of de Jong would essentially end their ability to spend big on other areas. That is because the current proposed offer would take a large part of their transfer budget for this summer.

Hence, finding market opportunities would be the way to solve our issues this summer, with Christian Eriksen being one such target who fits the ball. After all, he is available on a free transfer, and his potential signing would not dent our ability to facilitate transfer business.
