Ajax star Jurrien Timber sets transfer condition amidst Manchester United interest
Ajax starlet Jurrien Timber has set a certain condition for entertaining transfer offers amidst interest from Manchester United for a potential move. He has arguably been the best player for his side this season which is quite remarkable indeed for someone who is still growing to become a fully-fledged superstar.
Erik ten Hag is looking to facilitate a squad overhaul at Old Trafford this summer and wants Timber to help in that regard. Their prior affiliation could help Man United prise the centre-back away ahead of the next season. That being said, the English club are forced to wait for a while as he will only take a final decision on his future after the international break and the holidays.
Speaking ahead of the Nations League games, as relayed by De Telegraaf (h/t The Sun), Timber has revealed that there is no reason for him to leave Amsterdam if he is not a guaranteed regular elsewhere. The Dutchman added that he would only accept a proposal if such a move would be right for his development.
“In the end, my gut feeling will be the deciding factor. The picture has to be right. You can go to a big club. But if you’re not going to play there it’s better to stay with Ajax. And Ajax is also a big club. We play football in the Champions League and I play there together with the best players in the Netherlands. That is not nothing.”
Should Man Utd be worried?
The supporters have not shown any signs of worry even after the 20-year-old’s latest admission. The fans’ sentiment is understandable to an extent if the Red Devils’ defensive struggles from last season are anything to be considered. While the lack of balance within the team did play a part in these issues, the defenders themselves did not cover in glory either.
In such a case, it would not be unrealistic to see Timber become a regular at Carrington if he does accept our proposal moving forward. That is especially the case with ten Hag at the helm, as the boss did play a major role in helping the young prospect reach his current level.
Centre-backs like Phil Jones and Eric Bailly will leave the Manchester club in the summer transfer window. Our other options like Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof have not played at their best either, so if Timber can replicate his promise in England, there is no reason to see why he would not be a starter for us.
Timber’s intentions are certainly reasonable, as even with the massive potential, he still has some ways to go before reaching his best self. That would not be possible without earning regular game time, so the board must provide him certain assurances in that regard to help with their case.

One thing that may cause concern is how the Eredivisie prospect expressed that he does not feel “done” with his current club. However, he also mentioned that his progress could take place elsewhere as well, which does give some leeway for the Mancunians to push ahead for a potential transfer.
