Manchester United dealt transfer blow as Frenkie de Jong conveys his intent to stay at Barcelona

Manchester United have been handed a transfer blow as Frenkie de Jong has expressed his desire to stay at Barcelona past this summer. This news would massively dent the English club’s hope of signing the central midfielder ahead of the next season.

Erik ten Hag wants to reunite with de Jong at Old Trafford with plans to use the midfielder to facilitate their rebuild moving forward. Man United are plotting to rest Barca with a bid this summer, with the Spanish side going through a rough phase with their finances. However, a move may not be possible following the latest revelation.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN Netherlands’ Pascal Kamperman on Tuesday, de Jong has firmly revealed that he wants to remain at Camp Nou in the future. He even goes on to say that the Blaugrana side have always been his dream club, and the club’s struggles have not filled him with regret in any case.

“I prefer to stay with Barcelona. Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”

Massive statement from de Jong!

It is pretty clear at this point how the Dutch international has no plans of moving to Carrington any time soon. In fact, he has even confirmed that there has not been any contact with ten Hag or the Red Devils regarding a potential move in the future.

Hence, it would be best if we end our interest in the 25-year-old, considering how we have been let know of his stance at this moment. While Xavi Hernandez’s side could still decide to sell de Jong to balance their books, it is highly doubtful a transfer can be facilitated without his approval.

There is no doubt that de Jong would have massively boosted our midfield if he would join us this summer. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and we certainly do not need someone who is not keen to join us. After all, it would always be best to sign players who are eager to succeed with us, unlike in this situation.

Furthermore, the La Liga midfielder is also valued at €75million, which is quite expensive for someone who has had a mixed time with the Catalans. Perhaps, it would be best if we turn our gaze towards other targets who have a desire to join us and are cheaper as well.

More Manchester United News

We are set to lose Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic this summer, and replacing them would undoubtedly be a stern challenge for us. As such, the Mancunians must not take appropriate action and prepare a shortlist of other options rather than continuing to pursue a lost battle.

The fans would hope to see that the board would remain sensible in this case. Some are even reminded about what had happened with Angel Di Maria in the past. They do not want to have players who have no intention to join the club, which is understandable under the current circumstance.
