Transfer News: Wolves start contract talks with Manchester United target Ruben Neves

Wolves Technical Director Scott Sellars has revealed that they have decided to start contract talks with Manchester United target Ruben Neves ahead of this summer. He has attracted a lot of attention from elsewhere as a result of his excellent displays for the Molineux side in the past few seasons.

Neves has been a crucial part of Wolverhampton Wanderers and have contributed to their rise in recent years. His performances have not been overlooked, with clubs like Man United, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid keeping tabs on his situation. Now, it appears to be that Wolves are looking to ward off these interests with a contract extension.

Speaking in an interview with Express and Star (h/t The Sun), Sellars has conveyed that they are currently trying to find the best possible solution for all the parties. He added that negotiations are underway and it remains to be seen just how it will progress.

“We’re obviously talking to him and we all know how much he loves playing for the club. We know how much he has settled here, but he is also an ambitious young man. As with all players, you try and have an open dialogue with them and their representatives to come to the best scenario for the club and the player. Rightly so, elite clubs all over Europe will have Ruben on their radar, but we have an excellent relationship with him and will do things properly, and collaboratively when the time is right.”

Open to all options?

The Portuguese midfielder is currently valued at £50million by his current club, which seems to be a reasonable price tag considering the circumstances. After all, his contract would only expire in 2024, and he is among the best players in his position in the Premier League.

Interestingly enough, Sellars’ words indicate that the Wanderers knows how they would have to sell the 25-year-old star this summer if an agreement can’t be reached regarding a renewal. After all, that would be the best way for them to secure top dollar for Neves, which in turn can be reinvested in the squad.

The Manchester club have to keep a close eye on the situation and see the outcome of the contract discussions. A favourable result should be quickly followed by a push from our side, handing the player an alternative over staying at the Molineux.

The Gunners particularly seems to be our main rivals considering their degree of interest in the Premier League ace. He is among the top names in their transfer shortlist as they look to bolster their promising project under Mikel Arteta.

Others cannot be taken lightly either, but we must push ourselves into the pole position at all costs. After all, Neves should arguably be our priority, considering how we lack a dependable pivot in midfield. Nemanja Matic is the only current Red Devils star with a suitable profile, but he is well past his prime and needs to be replaced soon enough.

It remains to be seen if Neves will seek a new challenge or will seek to continue writing his story at the Molineux.
