Manchester United managerial target Erik ten Hag could leave Ajax Amsterdam at the end of the season

According to Metro, Erik ten Hag, who is on the Manchester United managerial wishlist, will leave Ajax Amsterdam at the end of the season. The Dutch manager is one of the preferred options along with Mauricio Pochettino for the esteemed managerial role at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have struggled to maintain their competitive edge over the years. The Mancunian club has struggled to keep up with city rivals Manchester City with respect to consistency as well as silverware.

Whilst former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer anchored the club to the best of his abilities, a poor run of form at the start of the season saw the Red Devils sack the Norwegian after a humiliating defeat to Watford in the Premier League.

Ralf Rangnick has been appointed on an interim basis but exits from the FA Cup as well as the UEFA Champions League means that the club could do well to hire another manager who has significant experience at the elite level.

The latest development with respect to the 52-year-old manager could be music to the ears of United supporters all around the world. Whilst this is a significant boost we shouldn’t jump the gun too early as there isn’t any concrete evidence that ten Hag will take up the job at Old Trafford.

Can Erik ten Hag revitalise the Theatre of Dreams?

The Red Devils haven’t won a single major trophy in five years and that is a very long wait for a top club like Manchester United. There seems to be a lack of cohesion and mentality within this group of players at the moment.

The Ajax manager has transformed the fortunes of the Eredivisie club ever since taking over at the helm. He has developed young exciting prospects into potential world-beaters rather than just spending the big bucks on purchasing top talent.

His side plays an intense brand of attacking football coupled with the technical ability to leave even the biggest clubs chasing their shadows at times. He famously led his Ajax squad to the semi-final of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League only losing out on a spot in the final courtesy of a late flourish from Lucas Moura in their second leg.

This is no small feat considering the fact that he isn’t provided with the kind of financial resources that some of the European behemoths are afforded. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager on the other hand has come under wide scrutiny for failing to dominate in Europe with PSG after their team crashed out in the Round of 16 of the Champions League to Real Madrid this season.

More Manchester United News

In an earlier report by ESPN, the names of Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, Julen Lopetegui, and Luis Enrique have also been thrown in the fray but ten Hag and Pochettino are the prime candidates at the moment. Hopefully, the club will have a good manager who can bring back the glory days at Old Trafford as our chances of landing the Dutch manager may have just increased.
