Manchester United target Ronald Araujo and Barcelona far apart in talks over new contract
According to the Spanish news outlet Sport (h/t The Sun), Barcelona and Manchester United target Ronald Araujo is far apart in talks over a new contract ahead of the summer transfer window. This news would be a great piece of information to those at Old Trafford as they have been keeping tabs on the central defender.
Araujo will see his current contract at Camp Nou expire at the end of the 2022-23 season. As a result, Barca are looking to tie him down on a new deal with Man United and several other Premier League clubs interested in his services. The Spanish side have tabled an offer worth £2.5million a season in wages, but that would still see him remain one of the lowest earners of the team.
The Uruguayan wants a salary similar to what Ansu Fati and Pedri earns at this moment- around £5million per season. Hence, there is a “great” distance between the Catalans and the centre-back and “the agreement is moving away” as a result. This update would undoubtedly be a major boost to the Red Devils, who could gain the upper hand by offering him an improved contract.
Man Utd must take action!
The need for a centre-back signing has risen over the past few weeks due to our defensive fragility that has unraveled during that period. Harry Maguire has struggled throughout this term, even if a large portion of the criticisms he has faced is undeserved. Others like Phil Jones and Eric Bailly would need to be moved out as well since they simply lack the required quality to consistently perform at the top.
Even Raphael Varane has not reached the same level that he was expected to perform at since his move. Araujo can be a great choice as he is arguably the best young centre-back in La Liga at this moment. He is touted as his “team’s great defensive benchmark”, which is truly deserving, looking at how he has performed since achieving promotion to the first team.
The other Premier League clubs who are interested in Araujo also have the capabilities to financially best Xavi Hernandez’s side. As such, we have to use this opportunity to make our case and prise him away as soon as possible before our competition causes trouble.

Despite the current situation, we must still be wary of the Blaugrana club as they “still has time to rectify to try the agreement“. However, we may need to find a solution to our managerial uncertainty as our transfer targets would probably want to know who will be leading them should they move to Carrington.
It will be interesting to see how the Mancunians would respond to this update and if any actions would be taken to push for a move. Whether that will happen or not would only be known in due time.
