Wolves could lose Manchester United target Ruben Neves if they miss out on European football

According to transfer specialist Dean Jones speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t The Sun), Wolves could lose the services of Manchester United target Ruben Neves if they miss out on European football for next season. He has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League for quite a while and would be a great option for the Red Devils to bolster their squad.

Neves has been a long-term target for Man United, but they failed to add him to their ranks despite their interest. However, it seems that they could be in line to receive a transfer boost regarding their pursuit to sign him in the future. However, they will need to be wary of Arsenal, who are keeping tabs on him, having been a long term admirer of the midfielder.

Wolverhampton Wanderers could find it difficult to keep hold of the Portuguese international if they fail to qualify for any of the European competitions. That could pave the way for Ralf Rangnick’s side to try their chances of finalising a transfer, but the Gunners will no doubt pose a thorn in their pursuit.

“His quality is undoubted, and I think that if they don’t qualify for Europe then it’ll probably be time to say goodbye.”

Potential summer boost?

The Wanderers are in contention to make it into the European places, but they are out of the spots at this moment. They would need to get into seventh place in the Premier League table to qualify for at least some sort of European football in the next campaign.

Bruno Lage’s side is currently in eighth place in the league table with 46 points from 29 matches, and they are in close quarters with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. The latter duo has 48 points in their kitty, with Spurs having played a game less than the other two clubs.

We are also around that area which makes up for an interesting couple of months ahead of the summer transfer window. Let’s hope that Tottenham and West Ham can give us a hand to push Lage’s team so that we can have a genuine chance to sign Neves after this term.

The need for a holding midfielder in our ranks has been highlighted many times recently. We looked more composed and stable with Nemanja Matic on the pitch, but he is the only natural option we have in our squad. Others like Scott McTominay and Fred can play there, but they are more or less box to box midfielders.

Even Matic is well past his prime and would need to be replaced moving forward. Neves can be a great option for us as he has earned PL experience while excelling in that role over the years. Now we have to wait and see whether Wolves would make it into the top seven spots or not moving forward.

Earlier, we received the asking price for the 25-year-old, which is touted to be £42million. That seems to be a fair valuation, but we could negotiate to bring down the asking price as much as possible. Then again, if Wolves are stern with their stance, we should pay the amount since a defensive midfielder is a necessity for us.
