Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes responds to Paul Scholes criticism after Leeds win

Speaking to the club’s official channel on MUTV (h/t Express), Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes responded to ex-United player Paul Scholes, who called the star ‘soft’ in the aftermath of the Leeds win.

Fernandes notched up a goal and an assist in the 4-2 win over Leeds United last night, putting in a stellar display as he helped his club tighten their grip on fourth place in the Premier League table.

In what was a physical and tough game against bitter rivals Leeds, Fernandes was subject to some heavy tackles during the match, but played it off as being part of the rough nature of the English game.

“It’s England, no? It’s English football so I have to get used to it, it’s okay.”

During the build-up to Leeds’ second goal, in what was an equaliser in the context of the game, Fernandes went down after heavy contact from Adam Forshaw. Scholes was critical of the Portuguese maestro, saying the player was looking for the foul and accused him of being too ‘soft’.

“Think it was a foul”

Although at fault for giving the ball away for Leeds’ equaliser in the second half, the United star made up for it by winning the ball back from his opponents and driving up the pitch, which led to the Red Devils taking the lead once again after Fred fired them ahead.

Scholes may have been critical of the midfielder’s attitude on the pitch when Forshaw won the ball off of him, but Fernandes believed he should have won the foul after the Leeds player stamped on his foot.

“I think it was a foul because when I passed the ball with my right foot he stamped on my left. Obviously, I didn’t see if he touched the ball when I made the pass.”

Fernandes will hardly care about what Scholes said about him, especially given that he led his club to victory against their bitter rivals in such tough conditions. The players struggled to get the ball moving on a wet, muddy pitch on a day where the rain never stopped pouring.

The Portugal international continued his own fine form last night, scoring in back-to-back Premier League fixtures. The midfielder has been one of United’s most influential players since his arrival in the winter transfer window of 2020.

Much has been said about Fernandes going to the ground easily, even from former United players such as Scholes, but supporters won’t mind as long as the midfielder continues to deliver the goods regularly.

United fans will hope that Fernandes brings the same form we saw against Leeds against Atletico Madrid next in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The UCL is the club’s only chance at a trophy this season, so we can expect the players and staff to give it their all to try and win the competition.
