Ralf Rangnick provides an update on Manchester United superstar Raphael Varane

Speaking to BBC (h/t The Metro), Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick opened up on star defender Raphael Varane, who sat out of the 2-0 win over Brighton thanks to an illness.

The French international is a shoo-in for the Red Devils’ starting XI but was left out of our game last night after being hit with stomach problems. He was replaced in the playing XI by Victor Lindelof, who went on to help us keep a clean sheet on the night.

It appears to have been a late dinner that did Varane in as he started to show signs of discomfort in the leadup to the game. Rangnick confirms that medication did little to aid the recovery and the decision was made to swap the Frenchman out for Lindelof.

“We were hoping to get rid of it with medication but he did not feel well and that is why we played with Victor Lindelof instead.”

Thankfully, it does not appear to be a serious issue and the 28-year-old is expected to return to action soon. With our game against Leeds United just four days away, it remains to be seen if Varane will make the cut in time for the trip to Elland Road.

Raphael Varane to be back soon?

The Red Devils have struggled to keep clean sheets this season and it will not bode well for us to go into a crucial set of games sans one of our best players. Varane has struggled at times but his quality is unmistakable.

Having him return to the playing XI at the weekend will be a huge boost for us ahead of the crunch clash against Marcelo Bielsa’s outfit. With the Peacocks, who are one of our three biggest domestic rivals, fighting to avoid getting dragged into a relegation dogfight, it promises to be a cracker of a clash.

Varane joined Man United last summer from Real Madrid. He has since made 19 appearances across all competitions and is slowly making himself at home. Hopefully, he will now return stronger than ever as we look to end the season on a high.

One of the generation’s best defenders, Varane has won it all with France and Real Madrid. His experience and winning mentality have added much to the Red Devils squad. Hopefully, he will continue to add to his trophy tally, this time in red.
