According to Patrick Berger, the Chief Editor of Sport1, Manchester United have expressed their interest in getting the services of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji. He enjoyed a great season in the Bundesliga so far despite his team struggling on the defensive side of things.

Akanji has a contract with Dortmund until 2023, which has prompted them to offer him a new deal. They have recently proposed a salary package of €9.5million per season, but it has been rejected by the defender. That has given a boost to Man United, who are keen on signing him at the end of this campaign.

It is claimed that the 26-year-old is valued at a transfer fee of €30million ahead of the summer transfer window. It is unknown whether he has plans to move elsewhere, having rejected the latest contract offer. However, he could be a valuable prospect if an extension is not signed in the remainder of this season.

Potential summer arrival?

It is still unknown whether the German club would entertain an offer for the Swiss international next summer. But it would not be too much of a reach to say that there might be a chance if he enters the final year of his contract. Whether that will happen or not would only be known in due time.

This latest piece of information would be helpful since it would give us a starting point if we have plans to make our offer at the end of this term. The asking price is relatively low as well, making him a potential steal if we can get his signature. But we must make our stance clear to offer a choice to the central defender.

The Bundesliga ace is a ball-playing centre-back, which is almost a need in modern football. He has earned himself a name for his game reading ability, which helps him shut down opposition attacks before it gets dangerous. Considering our current defensive options, we might need him in our team after all.

More Manchester United News

Eric Bailly has suffered from injury woes and consistency issues, which means that he needs to be moved out. Phil Jones should also be sold as we need to raise our level if we have ambitions of returning to our glory days. Harry Maguire has had a difficult season, further highlighted in the recent 1-1 draw against Burnley.

Some competition might do wonders for Maguire as Victor Lindelof is not enough to break into the starting lineup. Whether that will be the Dortmund star or not remains to be seen.
