Report: Man United squad have a clear favourite for the managerial position

Mauricio Pochettino has turned down Man United.

Manchester United players prefer Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag as their next manager

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United players appear to prefer Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag to become the next permanent manager at Old Trafford. Ralf Rangnick is currently in the hot seat on an interim basis and is in line to become a consultant for the club at the end of this season.

The Red Devils have ramped up the process of finding their man following the departure of Ed Woodward. Pochettino and Ten Hag are the main competitors to take the job and as things stand, the Red Devils squad prefer the former to be given the nod. The Argentine was heavily linked to the Man United job in the past but a move never came to fruition.

The former Tottenham Hotspur coach’s job at Paris Saint-Germain could wade into choppy waters if he fails to beat Real Madrid in the round of 16 of the Champions League. He has had a long-standing interest in managing the Manchester club, which could develop into reality in the coming months.

The Argentinian is in constant contact with his former Southampton protege Luke Shaw. Pochettino’s success at Spurs and Southampton have impressed the rest of the squad as well. The Glazers are looking to sign a new manager before the end of the season, and with the PSG coach’s contract set to expire in 2023, he remains in contention.

Pochettino, next Man Utd boss?

Having the approval of the players would be a bonus as we look to end the uncertainty regarding the managerial position. However, their preference should not be the only factor to take into consideration when appointing the next boss. After all, we need someone who can manage the players and not the other way around.

The former Saints coach does have Premier League experience and did a great job during his time at St Mary’s and the N-17. However, his shortcomings have also been highlighted in Paris and towards the latter stages of his Spurs reign. Erik ten Hag, on the other hand, could be the next big thing in modern football, making him a better prospect to rebuild the fallen giants.

The Dutchman has done wonders at Amsterdam, having taken his side to the semi-finals of the 2019 Champions League. What’s impressive is how he rebuilt the team after many clubs poached their talents after that campaign. His side have been a force this term and are leading the Eredivisie table as a result.

Ajax have done better than PSG this season in the Champions League as well. Even if Ten Hag does not have PL experience, coaches like Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, and Thomas Tuchel have also been in the same boat before taking over their current roles. While Pochettino is a solid choice, Ten Hag could take us to greater heights should he be handed the reins.
