Manchester United failed to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in exchange for Dean Henderson
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United were involved in a failed swap deal involving Dean Henderson and Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The proposed exchange was proposed on the deadline day of the January transfer window but it never came to fruition.
Newcastle offered Dubravka to Man United on the final day in an attempt to secure the services of Henderson. Both players would have swapped sides for the remainder of the season on loan had the move gone ahead. The Magpies ace, however, was not entertained by the idea and firmly rejected the proposal.
24-year-old Henderson has struggled for regular game time this season, but Ralf Rangnick was reluctant to let him leave. The German boss is not keen to sacrifice depth. With the Red Devils also crashing out of the FA Cup, the Englishman will find it very difficult to dethrone David De Gea as the number one choice at Old Trafford.
Tough blow for Henderson
If this swap deal had materialised on deadline day, the Englishman could have escaped his current plight of playing second fiddle to De Gea. Maybe, the Newcastle ace also realised that and refuted the offer for that same reason. He is getting game time at St. James’ Park at this instant which would have come to an end had he moved to Old Trafford.
Following the loss to Middlesbrough, the Red Devils ace could not play even another match for the remainder of this season. The Spaniard has firmly stamped his authority over the position, and it is absolutely deserved as well. He has returned back to his best since the start of the current campaign and has not slowed down.
The lack of minutes also resulted in the Man United keeper losing his place in Gareth Southgate’s team. That could explain why he is open to leaving us on a permanent transfer in the future. However, the Manchester club is undecided about what to do with him following this term.

The England international has a contract with us until 2025, indicating how we should not worry about his long term future. Then again, if he cannot earn regular minutes, it would be a waste to let him rot on the bench. We must find a solution to it as he has more than enough quality to replace the Spanish star in the future. After all, we cannot expect the latter to play for too long under the Man United shirt. Let’s hope that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel for Henderson after this season.
