Manchester United identify Brighton and Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey as transfer target

According to Daily Mail Online, Manchester United have shortlisted Brighton and Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey as a transfer target to meet their needs in defence. He has quickly become a highly-rated prospect in the Premier League under the guidance of Graham Potter.

Ralf Rangnick wants an upgrade on Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the fullback area, as the Man United duo has their own respective issues. Dalot is still young and can be suspect in defence at times while the former Crystal Palace man’s struggles in the attacking third are well documented.

The Manchester club is in the market for a right-back, and they are eyeing Lamptey as a result. They are really interested in the youngster and value him around £30million which is lower than the £40million asking price. Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on him but they have backtracked on their interest to pursue Adama Traore of Wolves instead.

Go for it!

The 21-year-old has been sensational since joining Brighton but his hot streak of performances was put to a halt by an unfortunate injury. The youngster has slowly been reintegrated into the team this season, and he looks to be back to his usual self. He would be a good prospect for the Red Devils, considering the right-back situation at Old Trafford.

The 4-2-2-2 system used by Rangnick calls for greater effort from the fullbacks in both areas of the pitch. The narrow formation naturally calls for them to provide width in attack while simultaneously contributing to the defensive side of things. And as it stands, it is understandable why the club isn’t best pleased with our current choices in that position.

The price tag set by Howe’s side does not seem too out of hand considering the potential of the Englishman. If he keeps on the current trajectory, it could make for a smart investment on our part. That does not mean we should give in to their demands, rather it indicates how it could be a win-win situation eventually.

The lack of balance in our midfield has been highlighted for quite a while, so our priority should be to address those issues first. But we still need reinforcements in other areas, so it remains to be seen if we would follow through with our interest in the January transfer window.

Signings in the winter market are usually tough to complete but if there is an opportunity for us to get the Brighton starlet, we should not hesitate on the matter. Time will tell, though, whether the club would actively pursue him in the coming days or not.

The ex-Chelsea starlet is a menacing presence down the right-hand side and can be nurtured into a top-quality full-back. A homegrown player who also has experience playing in the PL, this seems like a move we would be wise to complete. But it would also be smart if we can move one of Wan-Bissaka or Dalot around to cushion any financial hit we may take if we sanction this deal- even if there is no indication of it happening right now.
