Transfer News: Manchester United playmaker contacted by Tottenham over potential move

Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur approach Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard over potential move amidst his contract situation

According to transfer news on, Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Jesse Lingard over a potential deal amidst a contract stalemate with Manchester United.

The English international has played minimal football this season. Most of his appearances have been off the bench and the playmaker has rarely been afforded starts, regardless of the manager in charge. The additions of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho also perhaps mean there is no future for Lingard at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer but has not penned an extension yet. This has enabled other clubs to seal a cut-price move for the attacking midfielder in January or a free transfer in the summer. Tottenham Hotspur are now looking to pull off a coup for the Man United ace. They are open to signing him in the winter transfer window.

However, there are reservations about the Red Devils allowing one of their players to join a Top 4 rival mid-way through the season. Thus, a summer deal looks more likely, especially since the player might also prefer doing the same as he could churn out a massive signing-on fee.

Could Lingard leave in January?

The Englishman does look like somebody certain to depart in the coming months. He has struggled for consistent game-time this season, despite producing a wondrous campaign on loan at West Ham United last term.

But Ralf Rangnick is perhaps going to inculcate the youth into the setup, rather than making room for out-of-contract players that do not have several years left at the top of the game. It would be a wise decision to do so since we have a lot of exciting talent coming through the academy.

However, as far as Lingard’s departure goes, Man United cannot allow him to leave in January. Tottenham are direct rivals to us in the Top 4 race and are currently in a better position to land a UCL spot than us. Thus, we should not do anything to further their claim to do the same.

We could need extensive depth in our squad over the next six months since we shall be competing on three fronts. Ideally, it would be great if the academy graduate joins a foreign club in the summer, but until he makes a decision on his future, he remains one of our own and needs to fight for the badge until then.

We all know what he is capable of. He was nearly unstoppable at David Moyes’ Hammers last campaign and it is scary to imagine him pulling off similar numbers to help Spurs pip us to a UCL spot this season. Moreover, his experience in England, coupled with his versatility, makes him a very smart option to have in the squad- especially if we run into any injury or Covid-related crisis in the near future.
