Anthony Martial loan transfer “not close” as Sevilla wants Manchester United to chip in with the wages

According to the French news outlet Le10 Sport (h/t ESPN), Manchester United and Sevilla have still not reached common ground on the subject of wages for the loan transfer of Anthony Martial. He has seen himself fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford and has struggled to earn minutes this season.

The Spanish club is eager to take Martial on loan as they try to boost their squad to raise their chances of challenging for the La Liga title. His current salary package is worth €9million per season, which they are not willing to pay as they have deemed it to be too expensive.

The Rojiblancos want Man United to share the wage load and would only facilitate a move if their demand is met. It remains to be seen whether the Manchester club would agree to those terms in the coming days with the January transfer window now open.

Tight rope?

We have little to no room to negotiate unless other clubs are vying for the services of the Frenchman. He has already made it clear through his agent that he intends to leave the Red Devils for a fresh start. As such, it would not help us if we forcefully try to keep him at the club for too long.

The 26-year-old has seen his influence wane in the attacking areas, meaning we do not have much legroom in negotiations with the Spanish outfit. Our hands might be forced to cater to their terms if no other interested party enquires about his availability this month.

We have options to cover for him in the frontline, especially with the emergence of Anthony Elanga on top of our summer signings in Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. As such, we have to find a club for him in the winter transfer window as it would be in the best interest of all parties.

Martial arrived at United as a teenager from AS Monaco and many expected him to burst onto the scene under Louis van Gaal. His goal against Liverpool, where he left Martin Skrtel in the dust, gave fans a lot of hope that the Frenchman could well be the real deal.

But as seasons went by, the 2019/20 campaign turned out to be the only time where he actually looked like he had reached somewhere close to his potential. Since then, it has all been downhill. With Sevilla now interested in his services, we would be wise in getting him off our books in at least some capacity.

Time will tell a clear picture about what lies in store relating to the France star’s future as the days go by in the transfer window. Let’s hope that the matter is resolved soon so we can focus our attention on bringing in reinforcements to boost the squad. The Anthony Martial issue can then be permanently dealt with in the summer window. But for now, it’s not like we would be missing out on a lot if he moves to Spain on a temporary basis.
