Transfer Update: Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani only eyeing short-term deal to Barcelona in January

According to transfer news on Marca (h/t The Express), Edinson Cavani is ready to leave Manchester United and join Barcelona in January but only on a six-month move.

The Uruguayan international has not had an ideal start to the 2021/22 season. He came back late from international duty and had to put in the hard yards to gain match fitness. Once he was fit, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made him play second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The striker was later starting to form a good partnership with the Portuguese international but suffered an injury again. With game-time not guaranteed under Ralf Rangnick, a move in January could be on the cards. Barcelona are keen on signing the South American star following the retirement of Sergio Aguero.

However, the 34-year-old is only looking to seal a six-month move to the Blaugrana club. This could be because the striker has been dreaming of a return back to his home continent, with Corinthians and Boca Juniors eager on landing his signature.

Cavani all set for Man United exit?

The Red Devils are still on the hunt for trophies this season. We are set to face Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Champions League while we could also go deep into the FA Cup. A top 4 spot in the league is also there for the taking.

Thus, in such a scenario, it does not bode well for us that our only other out-and-out centre-forward option is preparing to leave the theatre of dreams mid-season. If Ronaldo does get injured, it could pose a massive problem for Rangnick, not least because of the number of goals the Portuguese international scores.

The Uruguayan is also a leader on the pitch, not to mention a significant voice in the dressing room. His departure could, hence, create a hole in the squad and cause an imbalance. However, with only six months remaining on his contract, Man United could churn out a transfer fee for him.

Cavani has been wonderful for us in the past 18 months, but it could be time for him to bid goodbye to the Old Trafford faithful. The club does have young options in the frontline, but few have the determination and the intensity levels of the South American star. Thus, only time will tell whether he actually goes through with a move to Spain.
