Manchester United ace Nemanja Matic weighs on his aim of becoming a manager

Speaking in a Q&A session with the fans (h/t Manchester United official), Nemanja Matic has opened up on his desire of becoming a manager after retirement. A fan asked if it was true that the Serbian wanted to take up the role of a manager after hanging up his boots, and the former SL Benfica midfielder affirmed that it is true.

Matic joined United from Chelsea for £40million in 2017 and has made 168 appearances at Old Trafford. While he is a defensive midfielder, he also has chipped in four goals and assisted nine times during that period.

Having admitted his goal of becoming a manager, he was asked about his plans for the task. He addressed that he eventually wants to reach that objective but, that is far ahead of his current intentions.

“Yeah, that’s kind of the plan. I started my coaching badges but I don’t think yet about this. I focus on my job now in football.”

The 33-year-old was adamant that he still has years left in him as a player and a managerial career is not in his plans currently. He added that he would assess his options once he reach that point and take necessary action.

I think I have still got four or five more seasons to play. After that, we will see but, at the moment, I am only focusing on playing football.”

Looking at the circumstance, it is unlikely that the Serbian will be having a fair share of minutes at a top club. While he has featured 11 times this season, the game time does not even amount to five matches and it is clear that Fred and Scott McTominay are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred starters in midfield.

In the meantime, even if he is far from the peak of his powers, he still has a lot to offer to the team by being a backup. If he is open to being a squad player, he could have a future for some years at Man United. After that, he would have ample time to pursue his goal of managing a football club- and who knows, it could turn out to be the Red Devils!
