Manchester United handed blow by Barcelona boss Xavi in Ousmane Dembele race amidst contract issue

According to the Manchester Evening News, new Barcelona manager Xavi remains keen on renewing the contract of Ousmane Dembele despite transfer interest from Manchester United.

The former Barcelona captain and midfielder was hired by Joan Laporta after sacking Ronald Koeman last month. However, it looks like the Spaniard has not wasted any time in making big decisions regarding some key players.

Ousmane Dembele is in the final year of his contract at the Blaugrana club. He is yet to sign an extension and could move away on a free transfer next summer. In fact, the player recently returned from a four-month layoff, only to suffer a hamstring strain again.

Despite this, Xavi has already made it a priority to get the player to sign a new deal. The French international was incredible during his time at Borussia Dortmund but has managed to pull off similar performances in the famous blue jersey.

The former Spanish international might like his chances of getting the best out of the player during this new era at the club. However, Man United might not take kindly to this news.

They have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old and remain a viable option for him if he does decide to leave Spain

The Red Devils could also benefit from this. Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard are likely to depart the club at the expiry of their respective contracts next summer. Cristiano Ronaldo shall also be six months away from turning 38 at the start of next season.

Hence, the addition of a young and vibrant forward on a free transfer is a clever coup. But that door seems to be closed for now as Xavi looks to begin his tenure at his former club with the Frenchman a part of his plans.
