Transfer News: Barcelona looking to seal a deal for Manchester United star Edinson Cavani in January
According to transfer news on Sport (h/t Daily Star), Barcelona are eyeing a deal for Manchester United ace Edinson Cavani in January.
The 34-year-old signed for the Old Trafford outfit at the start of last season and has since become a crucial player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The striker came good for the Red Devils towards the end of last season as he ensured a 2nd place finish in the Premier League and a spot in the UEFA Europa League final.
Cavani also committed his future to the club as he signed a one-year extension in May. However, he had a slow start to the current campaign as injuries coupled with the competition in the frontline, kept him out of the starting line-up.
But he was quick to prove his importance last weekend when he was fielded in a front-two with Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair combined brilliantly as they ripped apart Tottenham Hotspur on the counter-attack.
Despite the number of young attackers in United’s ranks, the experienced forward has shown that he still has in it him which is also evidenced by his high-work rate off the ball. However, he has now caught the attention of La Liga giants Barcelona.
The Blaugrana suffered a blow recently as summer signing Kun Aguero was diagnosed with a heart condition. They are planning on bringing in reinforcements in January, with Cavani high on their priority list, especially since he only has a little over six months on his current contract.

It is thought that a final decision shall only be made once Xavi is appointed as the new head coach, which might be done by the end of the week.
Moreover, the Uruguayan will have to take a pay-cut to join the financially struck Catalonia outfit but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be keen to not let his star man leave mid-season, especially if the Manchester-based outfit hopes to compete for big trophies this term.
