Peter Crouch believes Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips can make Manchester United title contenders
Speaking to MailSport (h/t Metro), Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch believes Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips can change fortunes for Manchester United.
The Red Devils have had a great start to the season as they have picked up 14 points out of a possible 21. Summer signings in Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane have fared well, while Jadon Sancho is yet to hit the ground running.
However, one area they failed to strengthen this summer was the midfield. While they do possess Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Fred, Donny van de Beek, and Nemanja Matic in their ranks, another defensive midfielder could have added a lot of quality.
Peter Crouch has revealed that the addition of Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips could in fact change the title fortunes of the club. Crouch told MailSport (h/t Metro):
“Here is an outrageous squad of players. Top class, quality everywhere, with possibly the greatest player in the world at their disposal. But there still remains a nagging feeling that they are not ready for a sustained title challenge.
“Put Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips in there — spending another huge amount on a new signing — and it arguably becomes the strongest group in the league. That is why it is baffling, with just a central midfielder lacking, that we do not really believe they can go on and win this title.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have already conceded 6 goals this season and have only managed one clean sheet in 7 games. Thus, a player to protect the defence could have done wonders for the Manchester-based club.

Additionally, given that Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea are above them in the league table, each point will matter from here on in, and every player’s performance will make a difference.
Thus, while United could do with somebody like the West Ham ace or the Leeds United star, it remains to be seen whether they will sign either of them.
