They say it is the hope that kills you and for Manchester United fans, that statement came true tonight against Young Boys.

The Red Devils went into the game as heavy favourites and were expected to carry forward the positive vibes reverberating around Old Trafford. Instead, they were cruelly brought back down to earth in a truly humbling loss.

Cristiano Ronaldo was once again the go-to man and gave the Red Devils the lead in the 13th minute. Rather than go on and build upon the start, United chose to shoot themselves in the foot instead.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s sending off in the 35th minute saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer go on the defensive. It was not difficult to see that the Norwegian’s plan was to shut up shop and hope for the best.

The goal was long in the making and Moumi Ngamaleu drew the Swiss side level in the 66th minute. Young Boys gained momentum from that point onwards and launched wave upon wave of attacks on the United goal.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw before substitute Jesse Lingard in a moment of madness put Theoson Siebatcheu through to score the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time. The English international was brought on for Ronaldo to help decide the game. Ironically enough, he did just that.

Serious questions have to be asked about Solskjaer and his mismanagement against a side that was clearly inferior to us. Just how long he can keep evading questions of this nature remains to be seen.

We now take a look at how fans reacted to the news on Twitter.
