According to The Financial Times (Subscription Required), the Manchester United recruitment team are set to meet next week in order to work out transfer targets for the summer of 2022.

The Red Devils are coming off the back of a brilliant summer that saw them land Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo as key first-team additions. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is still a work in progress and will need regular strengthening to keep up their might.

Despite this summer’s window having just closed, United are already looking to the future. While the report does not name any targets, work appears to be underway to identify those who need to be brought in.

One of the players on the club’s radar is West Ham United star Declan Rice. The 22-year-old is an able replacement to the ageing Nemanja Matic and is already a full international for England.

Rice also offers a more dynamic presence to both Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield. Also capable of playing at centre-back, the Hammers ace would be a worthy addition.

He would add to a core of English players who could form the club’s spine for the upcoming years. This includes Dean Henderson, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

United have been accused of being too passive in transfer windows gone by. This time, however, they have been more proactive and have reaped the benefits. Whether they are on the right track as far as long term development is concerned remains to be seen.

It is good to see that lessons of windows past have been learned and United are now more proactive than reactionary. The next summer may be a year away but the sooner we can identify our targets, the more time we have to get them over the line.
