Manchester United have the second most expensive squad in the top five European leagues
According to a report by the CIES Football Observatory (h/t Mirror), Manchester United have the second most expensive squad amongst Europe’s top five leagues.
The Red Devils roster is valued at £877m and trails only behind neighbours Manchester City who themselves are valued at a mammoth £926m. Chelsea is the next most expensive English side in the fifth spot. The Blues are valued at £669m.
United’s position comes as no surprise given the players we have at our disposal. The presence of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho among others adds significantly to the team’s net worth.
The Red Devils were the second-highest spending side in the Premier League this summer with £133.7m laid out for transfers. We were only bettered by Arsenal who splashed out £156.8m. The Gunners meanwhile are worth £542m and occupy the seventh spot in the list, one that is completely at odds with their competence on the field.
The top 10 is dominated by Premier League sides. Liverpool are sixth at £576m while Tottenham Hotspur come in at the tenth spot with a valuation of £472m. There are 13 Premier League sides in the top 30, a great indicator of the financial strength prevalent in the English game.
According to the report, the Premier League clubs have spent more than twice as much to assemble their current squads as any of Europe’s other major leagues.
With the expenditure running over £7billion, it dwarves the likes of Serie A (£2.9bn), La Liga (£2.8bn), Ligue 1 (£2.3bn) and the Bundesliga (£2bn) by significant margins. It is pretty clear why the Super League plans fell apart once the English teams pulled out.

United have a solid squad that has seen them emerge as genuine title contenders this season. As long as they are able to produce the results on the pitch, it will prove to be money well spent.
