Uruguay FA taking necessary steps to ensure Manchester United star Edinson Cavani is available for upcoming internationals
Manchester United star Edinson Cavani was one of the players who did not travel to South America for the international games this month.
According to Futbol (h/t Manchester Evening News), AUF vice-president Gaston Tealdi has confirmed that they are in talks regarding the availability of Premier League players for the games coming up in October.
Uruguay take on Brazil in the standout match of the month and it is evident that both sides would want their best players to be available. Talks are underway between both countries to come to an amicable agreement. What it means for the likes of United and other clubs involved remains to be seen.
Tealdi refused to confirm whether Cavani will be involved in the game or not. In all fairness, it is too early to decide. He, however, went on to reveal that the final decision will be made by the coaching department.
“That is handled by the coaching staff and sports management. They are talking directly with the sports management of Brazil and seeing the authorisations that are necessary. The steps are being taken and eventually it will be the coaching staff that will make a decision.”
The pandemic is far from over and we feel player safety should take precedence over international fixtures. One can never be careful enough and the clubs should have the right to not release players they deem to be travelling to unsafe locations.
The Premier League teams took a unanimous stand earlier last month to not release their players for the international break, if the matches in question are to be played in red-list countries, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Brazil did not take too kindly and have moved to invoke a rule which sees players who did not accept their call-ups for this international break, banned from representing their clubs for a five-day window. The Premier League are now set to talk to FIFA to reach a compromise.

A key player for Uruguay, Cavani is among the greatest ever to don the La Albaceiste jersey. He has so far won 121 caps for Uruguay and is their second-highest goalscorer with 51 strikes. Only strike partner Luis Suarez has done better.
