Transfer News: Manchester United and Man City could still compete for Erling Haaland
According to Sport 1 via Sport Witness (h/t Yardbarker), Erling Haaland could well be the subject of a ‘bidding war’ between Manchester United and Man City during next year’s summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker was linked to the Citizens throughout the summer, and Pep Guardiola’s side can trigger a bidding war next summer with clubs such as Man United, Juventus, and Real Madrid.
The report notes that Bayern Munich are effectively out of the race to sign the former RB Salzburg man due to the finances related to the deal. Haaland has a €75million release clause that activates next summer.
But including the wages and agent fees, a deal for Haaland may end up costing up to €300million. That is truly an eye-watering figure but nevertheless, the player is courting interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.
Haaland to United?
It remains to be seen if United would engage in a bidding war just a year after spending handsomely this summer. The Red Devils brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo and those deals were not cheap.
Moreover, Ronaldo’s role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would undoubtedly as a number 9. But despite the 36-year-old’s impeccable fitness, he would have to quit playing some time.
And that is the time that the club should start preparing for. Anthony Martial continues to divide opinion regarding his performances while Edinson Cavani is no spring chicken himself at 34.

Haaland would be a blockbuster signing in that regard, and could effectively lead the club’s line for several years. That would, however, require United to break the bank for him and even then, they may have to work hard to fend off other suitors for the striker.
