Transfer News: Manchester United ace Daniel James eyed by Atalanta
According to transfer news from Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web (h/t Sports Lens), Italian mavericks Atalanta are interested in Manchester United star Daniel James.
The Welshman was one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signings as Manchester United boss. While he enjoyed an excellent start to life at Old Trafford, a dip in form saw him drop off and largely play a supporting role. He could be set to fall lower down the pecking order now that Jadon Sancho has finally made the move to Old Trafford.
With Anthony Martial also set to stay, the Red Devils have enough options in attack. James, for all his promise, has only shown flashes of his brilliance in a red shirt. Unless he can put up the performances on a regular basis, he is better off moving elsewhere.
According to the report, a move to Italy could be on the cards this summer for the 24-year-old. Atalanta are keen to reinforce their attack and are looking at the Premier League for reinforcements. While James is on their radar, he is far from the only one.
Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, Everton’s Alex Iwobi and Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino are all on the list. While a loan switch away could do James well, Solskjaer is unlikely to sanction one thanks to Marcus Rashford’s situation. The Englishman has undergone surgery on his injured shoulder, effectively ruling him out of action for up to two months.
This could very well be the opportunity that James has been waiting for. He could be used in lieu of Rashford and also come off the bench to make use of his excellent pace. Whether this is his last opportunity to salvage a career at the Theatre of Dreams remains to be seen.
