Paul Merson reckons that Manchester United could win the Champions League this season

According to former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson (Sportskeeda h/t Metro), Manchester United are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils, who have won the prestigious competition thrice in their history, have not won the trophy since 2008. Since then, they have only reached two finals and three-quarter finals.

However, things seem to be taking a turn for United in Europe, as they reached the Europa League final last year, albeit they lost the game to Villarreal on penalties.

The club have, however, invested well this summer by signing the likes of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane for a combined fee of more than £100million. This has piqued the interest of Paul Merson, who believes that while United may have to wait to win the domestic title, but they could be a force to be reckoned with in the Champions League this season.

The Gunners legend has named the Old Trafford outfit as one of the five contenders to win the Champions League this season, alongside the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, and last year’s Champions Chelsea. Merson wrote in a column for Sportskeeda (h/t Metro):

“They counterattack as well as anyone in Europe and have a squad that has match-winners across the pitch with the additions of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. They (United) are the biggest club in world football in my opinion, so I’m not going to call them dark-horses.

“I don’t know if Manchester United will win the Premier League title, but when you look at the way they play, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the UEFA Champions League”.
