Real Madrid eyeing a move for Manchester United target Wesley Fofana to replace Raphael Varane
According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Real Madrid are eyeing Manchester United target Wesley Fofana as a potential replacement for French ace Raphael Varane.
The Spaniards are already reeling from the imminent departure of skipper Sergio Ramos at the end of the month. With Varane also looking likely to follow they will need to bring in a replacement ahead of next season.
Despite signing David Alaba, Los Blancos still need another defensive reinforcement. In Fofana they will be getting a player who is still young and can be a long term option for them.
The 20-year-old joined the Foxes from Saint-Etienne in 2020 for an impressive £36.5m. A largely unproven player then, Fofana has since impressed and is now worth his weight in gold.
His performances garnered him the attention of United earlier this year. While first contact has been established, the process is far from simple. United spent £80m on Harry Maguire in 2019 and Leicester will seek a similar amount to let go of Fofana. (h/t Sport Witness)
Fofana was a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side that won the FA Cup and finished fifth in the Premier League last season. Despite his young age, the Frenchman displays great maturity and confidence that goes well with his physicality and defensive nous. His ball-playing abilities could make him a key cog in the modern game.
Fofana is not the only United target that Real are chasing. The Spaniards are also keeping tabs on Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. The Andalusians’ insistence on getting his release clause met could however prove prohibitive. Not that Leicester will do them any favours.

United and Real’s search for a defender could be interlinked, thanks to the former’s interest in Varane. While we could yet make a beeling for Fofana, Varane is the higher profile player and can contribute for us from the word go.
