Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes gunning for European glory with Portugal
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has hinted that Portugal are keen to repeat their 2016 heroics this summer.
The Iberian giants won their first major honour by winning the Euros in 2016. They began their title defence earlier this week in a 3-0 win over Hungary. While they were far from their best, they kept going and got the job done.
They next face Germany before lining up against World Champions France next Wednesday. The clash could very well ensure who finish top of Group F.
“We will go until the end.”
Fernandes was not a part of the Portugal squad that won the Euros in 2016. He did however experience international glory with his country by winning the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League.
The United ace however refused to get drawn into a comparison between the current Portuguese team and the one from 2016. He rightfully claims that they will need to win the tournament this summer to even be in the conversation.
“I don’t know if we can be better because if we reach the final and lift the trophy again it is the same as five years ago.”
Fernandes goes on to add that the Portuguese team is currently involved in trying to do their best this summer. The squad is a united bunch and appears to have a strong team spirit. Whether they can go all the way and add their names to football folklore remains to be seen.
“We are united. Without team spirit there is nothing. The most important thing is us. That will help us achieve our goals, the perfect us.”
Portugal got their title defence to a solid start with a 3-0 win over Hungary. With bigger challenges against Germany and France to come, one can gauge a better understanding of their chances in the tournament.
