John Murtough waiting for Glazers’ answer regarding Man United’s summer budget

Manchester United football director John Murtough unsure of the summer budget as he awaits a response from Glazers

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t The Express), Duncan Castles has revealed that the Manchester United football director John Murtough is yet to be informed by the Glazers as to just how much money will be made available for transfers this summer.

The Red Devils go into the window knowing fully well that they will need to get their business right. If anything, this past season showed us that further reinforcements are needed for us to go over the line.

With the window now open, clubs should ideally be putting their plans into action. It is quite unnerving to think that Murtough still hasn’t been made aware of his resources.

Will the Glazers splash the cash?

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of top players this summer. The likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane headline the list of players seemingly on our radar.

However, none of them will come cheap and United will need to splash the cash. Despite the window already being open, Castles has revealed that the United committee appears to lack an idea of their budget.

“Interestingly I’m being briefed that the football committee, if you want to call it that, does not yet have a clear idea on budget.”

He goes on to add that the amount sanctioned could very well turn out to be just enough to satisfy the fans. At best, it appears to be a PR stunt to curry favour rather than a genuine attempt to strengthen the squad.

“It will depend on what the Glazers approve. That probably comes down to PR perspective of what is seen to have to be spent to appease fans who are literally revolting against the Glazer ownership.”

Empty promises?

Speaking after the Europa League final, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted on the need to bring in fresh faces. Joel Glazer also promised to invest in the squad during the fans forum earlier this week. However, if Castles is to be believed, Joel’s words have so far rung hollow.

Solskjaer is aware that reinforcements are needed

While things may improve in the coming days, it is not a good sign that we are in this position even after the window is open.

Given the public outcry the Glazers have faced in recent months, it is fairly inconceivable to assume that they will not attempt to pacify the fans this summer. However, just how deep into their pockets they are willing to go to do that remains the question.
