According to the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Express), Manchester United have been given a major boost in their pursuit of Real Madrid ace Raphael Varane.

The 28-year-old is one of the best defenders in world football and is a key target for the Red Devils this summer. With just a year to go on his current deal at the Bernabeu, Varane faces a pivotal summer.

The Spanish giants are aware they are at a disadvantage when it comes to negotiations and have softened their stance somewhat. They are now willing to sell Varane for £60million.

Real are keen to get a deal for Varane done quickly. They are desperate to ensure he does not leave on a free and are prepared to cash in this summer. This is good news for United, who are in need of a dependable defender.

Despite the ‘reduction’, United will still need to pay a significant figure for a player who has only a year left on his deal. It would be fair to assume that Real are looking to strike it big.

Varane is currently with the French squad for the Euros. It remains to be seen if a strong showing could further embolden Madrid to vary their asking price.

Real are set for a rebuild at the back this summer. Captain Sergio Ramos will be free to leave the club for nothing once his contract expires this summer.

Los Blancos are not keen for Varane to go down the same path, prompting their actions. After all, unlike Ramos, the Frenchman is in the prime of his career.

While Real are keen for Ramos to stay put, the player has so far rejected offers of a new deal. They are now keen to get a deal done fast so that they can bring in a replacement.

United aren’t the trendsetters in getting deals done quickly. Hopefully, we will not come out second best in what is a two-horse race for Varane.
