Solskjaer keen to honour Manchester United legend, Sir Matt Busby, with Europa League triumph
According to The Guardian, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seeking to honour club legend, Sir Matt Busby, by winning the Europa League.
The Red Devils take on Villarreal in the showpiece event later tonight in Gdansk. It is our first major final under the Norwegian and Solskjaer hopes it will be the beginning of a new era at the club.
Sir Busby was the manager who took United to glory on the continental stage. He led the club to its first European Cup in 1968. 53 years on from that date with destiny, Solskajer too can achieve the same distinction.
“Hopefully this is the start of something more.”
One of the club’s two great managers alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, Busby’s success at United is the stuff of legends. The duo alongside Jose Mourinho comprises an elite set of managers who have won a European Cup with United. Solskjaer could potentially join their company tonight.
A romantic, Solskjaer believes the match falling on Busby’s birthday is a good omen to his side’s chances. While that’s all well and good, we hope we are trusting as much importance in preparations as messages from the universe.
“I think it will be a good omen for us but the players need to do their job. Maybe we can honour Sir Matt’s birthday with another win.”
A bright future?
Solskjaer upped the ante further by suggesting that the number 26 is considered auspicious in Norwegian culture. He has had several key moments in his life occur on the date and once can understand why he is optimistic regarding our chances.
“My wife’s birthday is on the 26th, we got married on the 26th, so I have to believe in destiny, or skjebne [in Norwegian]. It’s a special number for us, for my family as well. I’m not very superstitious but it looks like a good sign.”
Apart from omens, United is on paper a better team in comparison to Villarreal. Winning a trophy will be a just reward for all the hard work we have put in this campaign and could pave the way for future glory.
“These are big nights for us. It might be the stepping stone for something better to come, a bright future.”

United have done well to see off illustrious sides such as AC Milan and AS Roma to get to the final. Now that we are here, the onus is on us to seize the initiative.
That is exactly what Busby and Ferguson’s teams would have done. It is fair to say that tonight will be a test for not just the players but also for Solskjaer.
