Manchester United to hold off on making a move for Erling Haaland until 2022
According to The Athletic (h/t The Express), Manchester United appear to have reached an understanding regarding their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian wonderkid is amongst the best young players in world football and has already proven himself on the biggest stage. While the Red Devils have been long-term admirers of the 20-year-old, they are ready to shelve it for the time being.
With Harry Kane now on the market, United are keen to land the English skipper. Any move for Haaland will now have to wait until 2022.
With Champions League football secured, Dortmund are in a strong position to keep hold of Haaland until next summer. The same was confirmed by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano earlier in the month.
Any move to land the 20-year-old would have set the Red Devils back by at least £130million. However, waiting until next summer will be cheaper given the player’s £64m release clause that comes into effect in 2022.
Given that Haaland and his representatives are demanding £500,000-a-week in wages, waiting for him until next summer makes sense. With fans set to return next season, the financial situation could also take a turn for the best.
Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are said to have sat down to discuss Haaland. The Norwegian has been told that a reunion with his countryman would be too expensive this summer. (h/t The Express)
The duo has also come to a pact to put their interest in the centre-forward on hold. They are in no mood for a lengthy and unrewarding transfer saga.
