Manchester United target David Alaba set to join Real Madrid in the summer
Manchester United have missed out on yet another Bundesliga defender, this time in David Alaba.
According to Sky Sports, the Austrian superstar will pen a five-year deal with Real Madrid and will join them in the summer. The contract is expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
The player had confirmed back in February that he would end his illustrious 13-year stay with Bayern at the end of this season. Alaba has been a part of numerous trophy-winning Die Roten teams and is in his prime at 28.
The German champions were keen to keep hold of the player and even offered him a lucrative £13m-a-year deal. However, it was rejected and both sides concluded negotiations last November.
With his contract winding down, Alaba’s availability as a free agent drew attention from a number of suitors, including United. After all, it is not every day that a player of his calibre enters the Bosman market.
Moreover, his versatility and ability on the dead ball added further nous to a player who has time and again proven himself at the top level.
The Butterfly effect!
This is not the first time that the Red Devils have missed out on a defender from the German top-flight. In fact, our pursuit of Dayot Upamecano came to nought when Bayern beat us to his signing earlier this tear.
Alaba’s move to Real could however pave the way for us to land Raphael Varane. The Frenchman will soon enter the final year of his contract and might be made available.
Real president Florentino Perez has already left the door open by claiming the player can leave if he isn’t happy.
